What to Do If an Outlet Is Warm or Sparking
Safe first steps for a hot or sparking outlet, from RTD Electric in DeLand, FL. Call or text (386) 469-8189.
Quick answer: Unplug what is plugged in if you can do it safely, turn off the breaker for that outlet, and do not use it again until it is checked. A warm, sparking, buzzing or scorched outlet can point to loose wiring, a worn outlet or an overloaded circuit. If you smell burning or see smoke, leave and call 911. Otherwise, call an electrician to find and fix the cause.
Outlets should never feel hot, spark, buzz or leave scorch marks. Here is what to do and what usually causes it.
1. Make it safe
Unplug devices if you can do so safely, then switch off the breaker for that outlet. If there is smoke, flames or a strong burning smell, get out and call 911.
2. Do not keep using it
Do not plug anything back in until the outlet has been checked. Taping it over or using a different outlet on the same circuit does not fix the cause.
3. Call an electrician
An electrician can open the box, check the wiring and find out why it is overheating. See outlets, switches and GFCI.
Common causes
- Loose wire connections at the outlet
- A worn outlet that no longer grips plugs tightly
- Too many devices on one circuit or power strip
- Damaged wiring behind the wall
- Water or moisture in outdoor, kitchen or bathroom outlets
A tiny spark vs. a real problem
A small, quick spark when you plug something in can happen. Large sparks, repeated sparks, popping, scorch marks or heat are not normal.
